Maurice Villien left Savoy, France for America in 1855 and founded a town bearing his name in 1889. When he first arrived, Villien sold goods in various Louisiana towns and, with his wife, established a grocery store and a home. As part of the effort to create a community, Mauriceville, in 1889 Maurice Villien donated 10-acres of land so that a church and rectory could be built. La Chapelle a Maurice, the churchwhich doubled as a schoolhouse, served the village until the St. Alphonsus Church was completed in 1893. The town of Maurice was formally incorporated in December of 1911.
